Si Tenemos Bananas

Trip to banana plantation in Costa Rica in May 2007. We were not permitted to film inside the processing plant (but there are several good YouTube videos showing this aspect), so this video shows our approach from San José to the plantation near Puerto Viejo. A highlight at 2:22 is when our van has to stop at a “banana crossing”: blocking the road came a horse hauling about 60 huge bunches of bananas hung on the wire line that crisscrosses the plantations to transport the fruit from the fields to the processing plant. The two workmen who cut and carried the very heavy bananas to the line can be seen riding along at the beginning and end of their load. The musical accompaniment is “Palalé Pot” by Cantoamérica from the wonderful cd, Cantoamérica 25 Años. I direct Arizona State University’s fabulous Costa Rica & Central American Studies summer study abroad program. Students study intensive Spanish in an immersion environment, live with Costa Rican host families, travel around this beautiful country, and learn all about Costa Rica in its Central American context. Come join our program next summer! www.west.asu.edu The ASU program is hosted by a wonderful language and culture center in San José, called Comunicare www.comunicare-cr.com. Contact Comunicare to set up a program for your university or high school. Join us on Facebook too! Costa Rica & Central American Studies Summer Study Abroad Program, and Comunicare Costa Rica. Joke Why did the bananas cross the road…
